England start with a win
England kicked off their 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign with an uninspiring 1-0 win over Paraguay in Frankfurt.
A 3rd minute own goal was all that England managed to produce in a lacklustre performance that coupled with Sweden’s inept performance against Trinidad & Tobago hardly flattered the prospects of Group B supplying the 2006 World Cup Winner.
Wayne Rooney stayed on the bench for the entire game with Peter Crouch replacing Rooney in the starting line-up.
Despite the much lauded pairing of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the centre of the midfield, England failed to control the centre of the park with Paraguay ruing their nervous start to the game that saw a David Beckham free kick headed into his own net by Paraguay captain Carlos Gamarra.
England boss Sven Goram-Eriksson said after the match, "We suffered a lot," with the heat. "This was the first real hot, hot day, and that knocked us a bit in the second half.
"The most important thing was to get three points today, and we got them.”
"It was a good start," he added.
The result may have been good but England’s play was ordinary at best.
