Germany wins World Cup opener
The World Cup kicked off in Munich with hosts Germany posting a 4-2 win over Costa Rica while Ecudor upset Poland in the second game on opening day 2-0.
66,000 fans packed Munich's Allianz Arena for the opening ceremony. They soon roared as one when fullback Philip Lahm gave Germany a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Costa Rica answered through former Manchester City and West Ham United striker Paulo Wanchope who slotted the ball past Jens Lehmann in the German goal before German striker Miroslav Klose was at the double to put the hosts in the ascendancy.
Wanchope scored his second to make it 3-2 before Torsten Frings rifled home a long range effort from 30 yards to ensure there would be no anxious moments in the final minutes for Germany.
There was no place in the starting line up for german captain Michael Ballack with Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann opting instead to give Ballack extra time to recover form a calf strain.
